Can you say “I love my job” - I can
The other day when I was introducing myself to someone and she heard that I ran a volunteer center she responded by saying, “Wow, you have a great job”. I agreed I am pretty lucky. I meet so many interesting people from all walks of life. The enthusiasm most have in wanting to help the community is very inspiring.
I think the individual that stands out the most is the woman who came to the Volunteer Center about 10 months after having a stroke. The stroke had set her back to a third grade reading level, she had lost her independent living, job, boyfriend, drivers license, and her ability to manager her life. Talk about life changing - To make things worse she lost her dad and two cats since the stroke. I was amazed at her strength, courage, and fight, not only to keep going, but to make her life better. This woman was fighting to grow a new life for herself. So why would she contact the Volunteer Center? She needed some new skills and place to practice them.
People volunteer for a variety of reasons. For some it is a company downsizing and they need to build their resume. Some are involved in groups/organizations that require community service. Others have an interest in helping a certain population or are now retired and want to give back. The list of reasons is long.
I am blessed with a great job and you are a big part of what makes it good. I invite you to share your volunteer story on this blog. Let others in on why you volunteer, what inspires you. Share a memory; let others find hope, and encouragement.
